​Sérgio Rainho Simões joined the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra as Bass Trombone in September 2016 and was appointed trombone teacher at the Universidad de Guadalajara in September 2017.

 

A native of Coimbra, Portugal, Sérgio attended to Cantanhede Academy of Music, Coimbra Conservatory of Music and Conservatorium van Amsterdam. His teachers included Ben van Dijk, Jörgen van Rijen, Remko de Jager, Pierre Volders and Bart van Lier.

He has performed as guest with other major orchestras throughout his career including the Gulbenkian Orchestra (Portugal) and Radio Filharmonisch Orkest (Holand).

Sérgio has been a featured soloist with the Banda Sinfónica de la UdeG (Mexico), Orquestra Clássica do Centro (Portugal), Orquestra de Sopros do Conservatório de Música de Coimbra (Portugal), Orquestra do IV Estágio AECMC (Portugal), Orquesta Escuela Carlos Chávez Trombone Choir (Mexico), among others.

He has been the recipient of some performance awards including first prize at the 2020 Jeju International Brass Competition. In addition, he was a finalist in Texas State Trombone Symposium and alternate to the final for both ITA's 2017 Donald Yaxley Bass Trombone Competition, and  2017 Edward Kleinhammer Orchestral Bass Trombone Competition.

He was on faculty at the Mexico National Trombone Week in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2024. In addition, he is one of the organizers of the Festival Ibero-Latino-Americano in Coimbra, Portugal.

He is also an active chamber musician in ensemble such as Lusitanian Brass Trio, and Threebones that has recorded a debut album that was presented during the 2021 International Trombone Festival.


Running alongside this, he had been studying Electromechanical Engineering from Coimbra Institute of Engineering, which degree he completed in 2013.

2015: Runner-up, Radio Filharmonisch Orkest (Holand), bass trombone substitute;

2014: 1st Prize, IV Concurso de Alunos Finalistas,  Coimbra Conservatory of Music.
