Sérgio Rainho Simões joined the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra as Bass Trombone in September 2016 and serves on the faculty at both the Universidad de Guadalajara and Universidad Panamericana (Mexico City). As an S.E. Shires performing artist, he is active internationally as both a performer and an educator.
A native of Coimbra, Portugal, Sérgio attended the Cantanhede Academy of Music, the Coimbra Conservatory of Music, and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. His teachers have included Ben van Dijk, Jörgen van Rijen, Remko de Jager, Pierre Volders, and Bart van Lier. He has performed as a guest with other major orchestras throughout his career, including the Gulbenkian Orchestra (Portugal) and the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest (Netherlands).
Sérgio has been a featured soloist with the Banda Sinfónica de la UdeG (Mexico), Orquestra Clássica do Centro (Portugal), Orquestra de Sopros do Conservatório de Música de Coimbra (Portugal), Orquestra do IV Estágio AECMC (Portugal), and the Orquesta Escuela Carlos Chávez Trombone Choir (Mexico), among others.
Sérgio has also presented numerous masterclasses at prestigious institutions such as Fresno University, and the Conservatório de Música do Porto. He has served on the faculty at the Mexico National Trombone Week (2018, 2019, 2020, and 2024) and the Festival Trombontepec, in addition to being one of the organizers of the Festival Ibero-Latino-Americano in Coimbra, Portugal.
He has been the recipient of several performance awards, including first prize at the 2020 Jeju International Brass Competition. In addition, he was a finalist in the Texas State Trombone Symposium and an alternate to the final for both the ITA's 2017 Donald Yaxley Bass Trombone Competition and the 2017 Edward Kleinhammer Orchestral Bass Trombone Competition.
He is also an active chamber musician in ensembles such as Jalisco Brass, the Lusitanian Brass Trio, and Threebones. Threebones recorded a debut album that was presented during the 2021 International Trombone Festival.
Running alongside his musical career, he studied Electromechanical Engineering at the Coimbra Institute of Engineering, completing his degree in 2013.
